Welcome to Paradise - A Paradise Ranch Novella

Blurb:

Just three days before her thirtieth birthday, acquisition editor for Starling Press, Sutton Callaway has buried the last of her family in the cemetery on the plot of land that she inherited.

After turning down the powerful and wealthy owner of Triple Bar-S Ranch to sell her inheritance and walk away from the obligations of running one of the biggest cattle ranches in West Texas, Sutton puts her Dallas condo on the market, resigns her position from SP, packs the contents of her life into boxes, and heads for the one place filled with bittersweet memories—Paradise Ranch.

Will Sutton be able to handle the pressures of being the newly appointed cattle baroness, the rough and tumble men under her employ, and the temptation of a sexy mystery man? Or will walking in her grandmother’s matriarchal boots be too much to fill?

My Review:

London has a beautiful writing style - lyrical, descriptive, brimming with life. She took me right into the scene and got me invested in the characters - I like them all. I love cowboy romances. I think I'm a real redneck (as my son calls me). I loved the accents in the narration. I enjoyed the feel of the book. Audio book is sometimes difficult for me as I find the best time is when I'm driving but I don't drive often. Other times I listen is in the kitchen, but when it gets to a sex scene I have to switch it off as I have three kids under 18 within hearing distance. But I really enjoyed this one when I got a chance. I think it helped to hear the accents as opposed to reading them. I won't give this book a rating as I see it more as a prequel to the series. It ends with a cliffhanger so I don't suggest reading it alone. I certainly do want to find out what's going to happen next but will probably look at buying the kindle book instead due to my lack of privacy.

Great sexual tension, setting, writing style and potential for a conflict-filled romance.

Guest Post by Landra Graf

Today, I want to welcome fellow Beyond Fairytales author, Landra Graf. She's talking about her new release and a vital ingredient to writing spicy romance. (This is one of the things I struggle with the most and also find puts me off a book if it's not there.) Isn't it a stunning cover??

Blurb:

Once Upon A Time...

Sorella Corvino lost her brother to The Cursed years ago. Sorella is so determined to find him, she'll make any deal, rescue the outcasts and those like him, and risk flying into any port to rescue him. When her latest pirate efforts partner her with a bounty hunter who's too charming, sexy, and handsome for his own good, she knows she's in trouble.
Ian Marshall no longer believes in fairy tales…
Disowned and a marked criminal in the United States, this merchant turned bounty hunter, is one bounty away from freedom; and freedom's price is handing over one person to the most cutthroat gang in the world, The Cursed. Yet, he can't get to them without Sorella's help. Too bad she's gorgeous, aggravating, and a little trigger happy.
As the attraction mounts, the danger grows and the pair find themselves invading a skin trader den, the ballrooms of dictator-ruled Germany, and fighting battles in the sky in the hopes of getting everything they want. Only thing they didn't plan on... falling in love.

Guest Post - The Art of Tension

Thank you Vicki for having me on your blog today! Readers, I've got a special treat for you. An exclusive excerpt, but first... let's talk tension.

For some reason tension, especially sexual, gets me going every dang time. Without fail if the author nails the tension piece I'm in it for the long haul. So, like any good author/reader I want to replicate what I love in other books in my own. But tension is hard to write, hard to drive up and up and up. When do you reach the breaking point. When is it time to cross the line and let the characters give in. Who knows? My characters tend to tell me when they've had enough.

Tension is also hard to fake. Characters have it or they don't. It plays the best through dialogue as well as actions. It typically works well in close quarters or cramped spaces. In fact, I have a scene like that, several actually, but this particular one shows the stakes being upped, emotionally and physically.  That's the job tension plays. It raises the risk, the level of play goes off of the charts. Oh, wait. You probably just want to read the scene. So I won't keep you.

He stepped through the door, filling up the space and reminding her of how small the roo really was.

“If I recall, I never said I wanted you to off the guy.” He set the coffee cup in his hand down on the small table near the door. “Since I finished my breakfast, I wanted to talk about getting off the ship to prepare for tonight.”

“I have everything I need.”

Shaking his head, he strode closer. Instinctively, she put a hand on the balisong holder at her waist, more to stop herself from reaching out than because she feared him. “You may have what you need, but if I show up in these clothes, they’ll call the coppers.”

She took in his worn jacket, his white shirt dirtied by days of wear, his trousers in need of a wash, and his dusty brown boots. Valid point. “All right, that’s fine. Anything else?”

“Your crew is worried about our meeting with the canary...eh, the singer. They want me to agree to protect you.”

Of course, Bonita and Bastille would enlist him to watch over her. They’d avoided Germany for the last few years because the government wanted her back so badly. Her wedding was still scheduled to take place in six months. All she had to do was stay in hiding for that long; instead, the desire to find her brother had her doing dangerous things. “Did you agree?”

“No, I don’t do anything unless something is in it for me.”

Her fingers twitched, and she tapped her foot on the floor. Damn men who didn’t say what they meant. “And what do you want?”

The question earned her a smile and the presence of his face less than six inches from hers.
She wanted to kiss those lips, taste him again, and wondered if she’d taste the coffee he’d drunk earlier. “I want you and me alone in a room for one hour. I want you to tell me everything.”

“Everything?”

“All the things you’re not telling me. Why people are worried about this ball, why that little girl thinks you’re a princess, and what you told Janken to get him to tell us about Luther and Eva.”

“You’re not asking a lot, are you?” she replied with as much sarcasm as she could muster.

He was standing too close.

“No, I’m really not because I want other things, too.”

He dared her with those words and the twinkle in his eye. Dared her to ask what those other things were. She refused to give in. “I agree.”

“With what I want or to wanting other things?” He was truly a master at manipulating words, no doubt a formidable merchant.

“I agree to tell you everything. My only condition—we won’t leave until we have a location for The Cursed.”

His turn to extend his hand. “It’s a deal, and I’ll even protect you, too.”

Touching his palm to seal the agreement was a mistake. It cost her a shiver and revealed how much he affected her. Surprisingly, he didn’t take advantage of the moment, no leaning in for a chaste kiss, no grazing her bosom, nothing more than a handshake and a release.

The fact he seemed unaffected by their momentary connection aggravated her. No sense in letting him have the upper hand. She unclasped her balisong and flipped it out, bringing the tip up under his chin. “When I want your protection, I’ll ask for it.”

She pushed him to the side and walked out. Let him wonder whether she wanted to kill him or not. She had things to do before tonight.

Ooh, I see the tension.

She is convinced no man will date a bald woman and arranges a one-night stand through Madame Evangeline’s popular service, 1Night Stand. With her new wig held firmly in place, Tamara arrives at the Castillo Hotel in Las Vegas for a night of passion and pleasure. When he finds an incredibly sexy woman lying on his hotel room bed in nothing but lingerie, he thinks management has made a mistake. Interview:

Who would be in your cast if your book was made into a TV show or movie?
Thank you for having me today, Vicki! If Beneath the Starry Sky became a TV show or movie, I would pick Josh Duhamel to play my hero, Josh. (Yes, he was the inspiration.) And I would pick Jennifer Aniston to play Tamara.

Which character would you most like to spend time with and why?
I would love to spend time with either one of them. They are both down-to-Earth characters who have had to learn to deal with changes in their lives. They’ve made tough decisions and are stronger for it.

Would you like to live in the world you created?
This story begins in Las Vegas, which to be honest, holds no appeal to me. I’m not one for big cities. But, they do end up hiking at Mount Charlston, which I would love to visit.

Which trait do you most like in your MC?
I like Tamara’s spunk. She does deal with some vulnerability due to her alopecia, but when she’s feeling confident, watch out!

Your MC is having a relaxing evening at home. What is he or she doing?

If she’s alone, she’s likely reading with a glass of wine. If Josh is with her, well, I’m sure you can imagine. ;)

Guest Post and Review - Taken by The Billionaire Alien Next Door by Jessica Subject

Today, I welcome Jessica Subject to my blog. She works for Decadent Publishing and also writes for them and is always so supportive of other authors. She's talking about her new novella, Taken by the Billionaire Alien Next Door.

Taken by the Billionaire Alien Next Door
By Jessica E. Subject

Erotic Sci-Fi Romance
ISBN: 978-0-9948431-0-4

Living on the other side of the tracks was a fantasy Erika never expected to come true. But when her mother marries an investment banker, she moves to a home larger than all her previous houses combined. While searching for her new stepbrother to help with unpacking, she stumbles upon his smokin’ hot neighbor, all alone in his mansion and busy at work on a… flying saucer? Can Erika escape before he notices her, or will she be abducted by the sexy alien?

Available from:
Amazon US / UK | All Romance | Nook | Play | iBooks | Kobo

Excerpt - 18+

“What exactly do you think I am, Miss Erika?”
“An alien.” There, I’d said it, and I expected him to laugh in my face and deny it.
Instead, he placed his hands behind his back and stepped nearer. “And what if I am?”
My breath caught. “I….” I should have kept my mouth shut. No, I should have waited for Barron to text a reply, never come over to the neighbor’s house. Now, I was stuck in a basement hangar with a flying saucer and a guy who could be from another planet.
Laken inched closer, and closer still. I moved along with him until my back hit a wall on the other side of the room. Trapped. Trying to duck away wouldn’t do me any good. He’d only race around and block my way again. My heart beat so hard, I expected it to thump right out of my chest. Would he let me go, or did he have other plans? If I screamed loud enough, would someone come to my rescue?
Leaning forward, he placed his palm on the wall behind me. “What if I told you I knew the instant you came into this room?” He ran his other hand along my cheekbone, tucking my hair behind an ear. “What if I told you I could feel your attraction, smell your sex?”
A shiver raced down my spine. Sure, I wanted to jump his bones before I’d seen his eyes. Now, I yearned for a way out, a clear path to escape from Mr. Sex-on-a-stick who may or may not be an extraterrestrial.
He dipped his head so close to mine, his warm breath brushed my neck. A flash of heat washed over me. Fuck, it had been so long since I’d been with any guy. Did it really matter where he came from?
“What if, Erika? If I am an alien? Would you still find me attractive? Would you still want to lick me from head to toe? Suck my cock? Would you want me to fuck you against this wall, in my spaceship, and on every single surface of this room?”

Guest Post

I asked Jessica what inspires her to write alien romances as she's written so many. Over to you, Jess...

Hi Vicki! Thank you so much for inviting me to your blog today!

Whenever I have a new release, or when I tell people what I write, I am often asked why I write about aliens. For me, there are many reasons, but I think the main one is that an alien character can be whoever I want him or her to be. I can make my heroes very dominant, or more on the submissive side. I can make them humanoid or appear more like a giant insect. If I want them to have blue skin (which is my favorite), I can do that, too. They can be bikers, billionaires, blue collar workers, or businessmen or women. They might want to abduct a lover from Earth, or simply live on the planet without anyone finding out where they came from. Aliens living on Earth are my favorite, too, because of their vulnerability. They know if anyone finds out, they could end up in a laboratory. So, when they finally tell someone, it means they trust that person with their life.

I love my aliens, and I will continue to tell their stories for as long as I am writing. I hope you can give a sexy alien a chance.

I love the ideas you come up with and you've certainly piqued my interest in alien romances.

My Review:

This is a short, impactful story with lots of hotness. If you like reading a hot romance - a short bite for a Sunday afternoon or lazy evening with steamy sex, this is a great read. I like the way the author told a story and gave us the depths of emotions to make it more than a couple of sex scenes. It was sexy, touching, full of surprises and well-written. To be honest, I would have preferred it to be longer but it tempted me to try more of her romances though.
